This Spa Town Is Your Jumping Off Point for Colorado’s Most Iconic Sights

Manitou Springs is a must-hit day trip with no shortage of history, and plenty of spas.

Welcome to Two Days Away, our series featuring weekend-long itineraries within a five-hour drive of your city—because sometimes we all just need a little adventure fix.

The colorful history of Manitou Springs stretches back to 1872, when the town was initially established as a scenic health resort for tuberculosis patients. Today, it’s a cultural destination all its own, whether it’s drawing visitors for its wellness offerings and eclectic vibe or acting as a landing point for nearby attractions. In addition to the eight natural mineral springs still flowing throughout the town, Manitou is also uniquely known for its many art galleries and local artisans, diverse food options, abundant hotels and day spas, and fun quirks like its Penny Arcade—a classic draw for visiting families. Once an 1800s railroad spur, Manitou Springs has transformed into one of central Colorado’s most interesting places to visit.

If you don’t do anything else: Visit Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, and the Manitou Incline

There is an attraction trifecta in the Manitou Springs/Colorado Springs area that begins with the Garden of the Gods. The 1,367-acre park is a registered National Natural Landmark that’s free to visit and drive through for visitors eager to see 300-foot sandstone formations and the vibrant, red-rock hue. Hopping out and snapping a photo for posterity is highly recommended.

The second biggest draw to Manitou Springs actually lies a few minutes down the road, technically in Colorado Springs. But people come from far and wide to summit the mountain that inspired “America the Beautiful,” Pikes Peak. There is a per-vehicle fee to drive to the top, but the breathtaking views of Colorado and beyond (and being able to say you made it to the top of a fourteener) are more than worth it.

And, if “Manitou” sounded familiar when you first read it, it’s probably because you’ve heard of the popular hiker’s challenge that is the Manitou Incline. Not for the faint of heart, the Incline is a whopping 2,768 steps that take you over 2,000 feet in elevation, where the views at the top are unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

The all-around favorite is Adam’s Mountain Cafe, which truly boasts a little something for everyone. Everything—down to the latte syrups and salad dressings—is made in-house, and anyone with a dietary restriction can find something tasty to enjoy given the restaurant’s varied menu across breakfast, lunch, and dinner. More on the romantic—and hands-on—side is the Mona Lisa Fondue Restaurant, which can be found right along Manitou Avenue, the main street in historic Manitou Springs. Aside from the array of drink menus at the popular food spots in town, breweries and wine bars are in abundance for a quick sip, tasting, or kicking back and relaxing for a while. The Keg Lounge serves fresh and fruity cocktails in mason jars and also has a pretty long list of beers, seltzers, and wines by the bottle. But Manitou Brewing Company is your go-to local brewery, serving up everything from full-bodied stouts to hoppy pale ales and everything in between, plus wine, spirits, seltzers, and more lip-smacking pub bites.

Where to stay in Manitou Springs

Make it a long weekend and dive fully into all the area has to offer, whether you’re into climbing steep steps up a mountain, drinking natural mineral water, or something else entirely. The Cliff House at Pikes Peak is a classic view when visiting Manitou Springs but staying there is another experience entirely; marvel at late 1800s-architecture that’s been lovingly brought into the 21st century. Your room will be special no matter what, and could include a gas fireplace, two-person hottub, or towel warmers.

If you’re looking for something more intimate, check out one of the several local bed and breakfasts, like the Blue Skies Inn. The small Gothic village is a garden oasis complete with a picturesque stream and houses 10 suites, each with a different style and story. The inn is a family-friendly getaway close to the nearby activity of Manitou Springs and surrounding areas.
