Red, White and Blue Strawberry Jello Shots

The three best patriotic holidays all happen during summer. Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day (and their related federal holidays) create a triple threat for warm weather partying. With so much America-loving and outdoor drinking to do, we needed a boozy treat that combines our loves of summer imbibing and our country (and three-day weekends). These colorful Jello Shots, served in ripe summer strawberries, are everything we could hope for between May and September.

Like any multicolored showstopper, this layered shot takes a good deal of prep work. First you have to hull out fresh strawberries (don’t get hubristic and start hacking away at the wall of the hallowed strawberry to make it bigger—that’s a quick way to puncture it and send yourself back to step one). Then you have to make a layer of blue Jell-O and curaçao, pour it into the strawberry cups and let it set. Then you have to make yet another layer from gelatin, sweetened condensed milk and vodka, top off the strawberries and let them set again. The whole process takes about 3-4 hours, but that’s a small price to pay for a lifetime of memories. You remember that time you made blinged out red, white and blue Jello Shots for everyone at your Fourth of July party? Because everyone who was at the party does.

The juicy berries, the creamy layer of spiked condensed milk, and the bright layer of citrusy and fruity blue Jell-O all combine into a sweet boozy explosion better than any firework.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 lbs Fresh Strawberries
  • .5 Cup vodka
  • 1 Cup Dry Curaçao
  • .5 Cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 packet Berry Blue Jell-O
  • 1 packet Knox unflavored gelatin
  • 2 cups Water

INSTRUCTIONS

Step one

Cut off tops of strawberries and carefully scoop out the inside to make a small cup (don’t pierce the bottom).

Step two

Cut off the bottoms of the strawberries in order to make them stand upright (again without piercing them).

Step three

To make the blue layer, combine 1 cup water and Blue Jell-O in a saucepan and let bloom.

Step four

Heat on medium, stirring, until Jell-O dissolves.

Step five

Remove from heat and stir in dry curaçao. Let cool slightly.

Step six

Pour blue mixture into strawberry cups until half filled and refrigerate until solid, about 90 minutes.

Step seven

To make the white layer, combine 1 cup water and gelatin in a saucepan and let bloom.

Step eight

Remove from heat and stir in vodka and sweetened condensed milk. Let cool slightly.

Step nine

Fill strawberry cups the rest of the way with white jello mixture, and refrigerate until solid.

Step ten

When jello is fully solidified, slice each berry down the middle to reveal layers.
